A Team of Teams

The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command is a world-class team of science and technology experts, explorers and developers, fully focused on empowering the future American Soldier.

The DEVCOM team consists of U.S. Army Soldiers, Civilians and contractors. Engineers, scientists, technicians and analysts, many of whom are the Army’s leading experts in their fields, form part of the team. They leverage cutting-edge technologies, such as synthetic biology, hypersonic weapons, quantum, energetics, autonomy, robotics and artificial intelligence to empower the American Soldier with the data and ability to see, sense, make decisions and act faster than our adversaries – today and in the future.

The DEVCOM team comprises eight reporting units and three regionally aligned international elements that work around the globe to make this vision a reality:

DEVCOM Forward Elements

DEVCOM Forward Elements: serve as the DEVCOM interface to enable decisive Multi-Domain Operations by identifying cooperative science and technology opportunities; facilitating interaction with foreign government and non-government entities and industry; promoting interoperability among allies; and supporting basic and applied research to develop capabilities and partner capacity that support the U.S. Army.

We believe in getting out of the scientific lab and into the dirt. We take calculated risks and find new solutions every day. Our experts drive scientific discovery, advance and improve existing technologies, and engineer solutions to technical limitations.

We believe in the power of collaboration. Our insight and experience with the realities faced by troops in a combat setting, coupled with our longstanding partnerships across academia, the defense industry, small businesses and international allies, place us at the center of a global ecosystem of innovators.

We believe in fostering a culture of trust, creativity and diversity of thought and background. From supporting STEM summer camps and collegiate internships, to providing unique continuing education and professional development opportunities and investing in world-class laboratory facilities – we know any investment in the STEM talent pipeline is an investment in our shared national security and way of life.

Priority Research Areas

DEVCOM’s mission is to continually deliver capabilities by proactively exploring basic and foundational research.

DEVCOM defines a Priority Research Area as a research area of particular significance or importance because it aligns with perceived warfighting gaps or opportunities.

The goal of Priority Research Areas is to unlock the realm of the possible by expanding the realm of the known to succeed against any adversary to ensure enduring Army modernization.

The current Army and DEVCOM Priority Research Areas include: Disruptive Energetics; RF Electronic Materials; Quantum; Hypersonic Flight; Artificial Intelligence; Autonomy; Synthetic Biology; Material by Design; and Science of Additive Manufacturing.

PRAs should also have the following key characteristics:

  • Knowledge product deliverable – a living document, and reference, capturing the progression of discoveries to the scientific questions in scope and updated impact to the Army
  • Qualitative dramatic impact – fostering overmatch and characterizing opportunities in the future Army operating environment
  • Ambitious and challenging requiring DEVCOM’s diverse talent working collaboratively in an empowered capacity to investigate the limits of possibility
  • High potential to seed future transformational capabilities and priority research
  • Envisioned to execute with 6.1-6.2 funding
