San Juan, Puerto Rico – Building a diverse and highly skilled workforce of scientists, engineers and analysts is a critical part of Army Future Command’s mission to drive technology development and deliver next-generation capabilities to Soldiers. In support of that mission, the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, or DEVCOM, attended the League of United Latin American Citizens National Convention and Exposition, from July 25-30 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Recruiters and subject matter experts from DEVCOM Headquarters and its Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Center and Aviation and Missile Center interviewed prospective candidates during the career fair as part of its plan to recruit, train and maintain a diverse and highly skilled workforce.

“This was our first year attending LULAC, and we were impressed by the prospective candidates who we interviewed. Recruiting events, including LULAC, give us an opportunity to get in on the ground level and meet prospective candidates who have strong engineering, analytical or science skills and will be a good fit for DEVCOM,” said Deborah Dawson, DEVCOM director of Human Resources.

The LULAC Expo featured 300 corporate partners, government agencies, colleges and universities, labor unions, armed forces and non-profit organizations that displayed their products and services. The Expo also featured a three-day Career Fair where companies provided information about employment opportunities.

This was the 93rd year for the LULAC Expo, which is the largest and oldest Hispanic civil rights organization in the country. More than 15,000 people attended LULAC, including leaders from business, labor and the community. Participants also include members of Congress, cabinet secretaries, local elected officials and academic experts.

Recruiting and maintaining a diverse workforce is a key priority for DEVCOM, which is the Army’s largest technology developer. DEVCOM employs more than 27,000 personnel in 100 locations around the world. DEVCOM participates in events, including LULAC, to connect with and recruit qualified candidates.

Attending LULAC also supports DEVCOM’s Talent Management Strategy, which includes building a diverse workforce that will drive the innovation, adaption and cultural understanding necessary to succeed in today’s complex environment. DEVCOM also recently established a Director of Equity & Inclusion office that will foster a culture of trust and acceptance and ensure equal opportunity and fair treatment across the command.

During the career fair, DEVCOM representatives interviewed 33 prospective candidates and collected 13 resumes for review and consideration by the DEVCOM Centers/Lab and AFC headquarters for future career opportunities.

The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command — DEVCOM — is home to the Army’s largest pool of civilian scientists, engineers, analysts and technicians who are the bedrock for discovering and developing the capabilities Soldiers need to deter, and when necessary, defeat current and future adversaries.

DEVCOM is a major subordinate command of Army Futures Command, and together the Team of Teams provides the scientific and engineering expertise necessary to better integrate modernization priorities and give the Army, as part of the Joint Force, the ability to act faster and more effectively than the adversary.
